Saeha Lee_how getting sober can change someone’s life

Explain in the context of the extract from Slash autobiography "how
getting sober can change someone's life."

 Sometimes, or just in the case of Slash and Megan, getting sober
cannot always lead to a positive outcome. The ending of their
relationship has started when Slash sobered up. Considering whose life
was more affected, I would stand in with Megan. After getting sober,
the way Slash behaved towards her was harsh as he mentioned. Slash
victimized Megan in the sense that she was compelled to leave him, by
simply saying, "I just couldn't take it anymore." He, with his clean
vision, did not want to maintain their relationship and prioritized
his own life. He changed Megan's role in his life from his lover to a
stranger.

Sober- a change of life perspective

Slash is a person whose life motto consists of the "do things my way". When Slash got sober he started to see things differently. Different in the aspect of once he was sober, his girlfriend did not have the same importance. From a personal point of view Slash had an awakening time after he stopped drinking. Once he realized his relationship was "time- consuming" he eventually understood other factors in his life where not functioning. Obviously he felt bad for his girlfriend, but that did not stop him from doing what he has always done; prioritize his own interest and his well being before anything else. Furthermore he mentions how he decided to focus on music and get himself together.
In conclusion Slash decided to quit drinking, end unhealthy relationships and focus on his career and happiness. As Slash expresses in his autobiography; "Do things my way", he is determined to follow his own principles in his life.

Explain in the context of the extract from Slash's autobiography how getting sober can change someone's life.

In his autobiography, Slash said: "With nothing to cloud my vision, it felt like she was a stranger". The destruction of insobriety resulted in his inability to perceive things in a manner that was stratospherically different than when he was sober. When he was under the influence, he was blind-folded, he was not thinking logically and was not acting spontaneously to the surroundings including Megan, whom I assume, was the closest person to him at the time. He felt like he did not know Megan at all. It might have been the anxiety of being sober that made him let go of Megan even though he was actually in love with her.  It is also possible that he was only attached to her because he needed someone to lean on, someone that could comfort and console him. Either way, breaking up with Megan was part of Slash getting his life back. For Slash, looking back on his life, he might feel regretful for the decision. However, it does not matter whether it was the right choice for him or not. It was something Slash had to undergo getting sobriety which, without doubt, changed his life only for the better. In my opinion, getting sober is a matter of self-realization and self-fulfillment.

Michael Ade Craig

SELF

A famous financier by the name of J.P. Morgan once said that you must, " Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you will be able to see farther". From the time I was able to operate a bicycle until now I have exhibited similar qualities with the message expressed in the quote. Maybe it's the competitive nature that fuels my curiosity or perhaps the desire to always challenge myself.  Whatever it may be that has caused this insatiable appetite for growth and exploration has shaped my life into what it is now.

On March 22nd, 1983 Michael Ade Craig was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the time of my birth my mother and father were together, however a legal bonding was not created until about 3 years later. Strangely, to this day I remember the ceremony that took place at my aunts home. It wasn't a very large gathering; the only people in attendance were my sisters. It's amazing what having children will do to your life and the decisions they inevitably force you to make. My parents were never in love, life took its course and they had "us", which meant that they had responsibilities to meet, thus was the reason behind their choice to get married. "True" Love was never a factor.

Being the brother of 4 sisters, one being my twin has never been an easy task. By association, the qualities that females exhibited rubbed off onto me complicating my life before I could fully understand what I was supposed to do with it. All through kindergarten, elementary school and part of my middle school career, I had problems fitting in because I wasn't the prototypical aggressive adolescent male who wreaked havoc. Don't get me wrong I had plenty of friends and I hated doing my homework, but I was different. For some hidden reason trouble never found me and I certainly did not go looking for it.

In 1998, High school brought my family and I to Phoenix, Arizona. This was a difficult time for me, as it should have been for any developing teenager. My twin sister took the relocation to Arizona particularly difficult. I think her entire high school experience can be summed up into how much regurgitating she did. The move affected me as well, however, the soft, feminine qualities that seemed to overpower my innate masculinity were disappearing and just in time. High school is where I first began to understand what I was capable of doing. I graduated with pretty good grades and received a full scholarship to attend an instate university.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away. Many influential people have coined this quote, so where the origin lies is uncertain to me. However, the aforementioned quote epitomizes how my college career can be unraveled. During my freshman year, seniors that I became friendly with never hesitated to remind me to enjoy every moment of college because it goes fast and you will wish it were day one all over again. I wish I took their words more seriously because college did go by at an alarming rate and it wasn't much long after, that I found myself behind a computer desk earning a paycheck.

Art was the driving force that led me to my semi-professional career in architecture. The way buildings were constructed never fascinated me in the slightest, but given the sort of lives freelance artist live, deciding to transition to a more lucrative path was a no brainer. Initially, receiving a decent paycheck and taking lunches without feeling pressured to keep track of time was rather exciting to me. Fortunately, I was able to obtain a position that paid me an honest portion straight out of college so most of the time I ate fairly well. About my 3rd month with the company I leased my first luxury car and moved into a studio apartment in the city. The feeling of success began to work its way into my thought process. During those days I felt like I could continue this lifestyle for as long as my heart desired…but my heart desired more.

I like to refer to this phase as my "contractual breakage" period. Due to my desire to learn and broaden my horizon, I applied for and received an English teaching position in South Korea. The position demanded that I relocate to Asia as soon as possible to be ready in time for the upcoming semester. The reason I refer to this time as the contractual period is because I seemingly broke every contract with every organization and institution that I was affiliated with.

Teaching was a great opportunity in my life. It forced me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to earn a paycheck while exploring the world. I taught English in Korea for over three years and while many other foreigners have made careers of teaching in Korea I decided to use my current situation to my advantage. Last year I went through the application process for graduate school and was successfully accepted into the Graduate School of International and Area Studies here in Seoul.

My mother used to always tell me to keep going no matter what you are faced with. Yes proverbs or idioms like this can be cliché at times, but they are right on target. We never know the path that we should take and the corners that we must cut. All we have to rely on is intuition and belief. Korea has opened my mind up to the world and how we are so connected. Who knows maybe if I relocated to another foreign country the same lessons would have been learned. Its not always where we go that defines your experience. It's the willingness to expand our somewhat narrow minds and take a chance and see what happens.

Foreshadowing to an earlier point of my existence, during my freshman year in college I was having trouble creating a belief mechanism in my mind on whether school was for me or not. My grades suffered and I lost my precious scholarship. It was definitely a maturation period for not only me but for my mother as well. That summer was the first time that she had to let her only son go out to the world and do some soul searching. School was disappointing and the Arizona summer heat was merciless, so my only option was to go somewhere cold.

An advert site by the name "Alaska Fishermen's Clearinghouse" provided me with an avenue to embark on something that only God knew that I could do. That summer culminating my nightmarish freshman year was the summer when I discovered the importance of challenges in ones life. I worked in Alaska as a fisherman for 4 years and earned enough money to financially support the latter part of my college career. It if hadn't been for Alaska, I'm not sure if I would have been able to sculpt my life in the same fashion as I have thus far.

Upon graduating from graduate school I hope to find employment with some entity in the UN. My goal is to be appointed as an ambassador devoted exclusively to the Human Rights Council.

Turna Elmaci

My name is Turna Elmaci and I'm from Germany. I'm a freshman in the UPeace program majoring in Media, Peace and Conflict Studies, before I have studied "Global Communication" at Hannam University in Daejeon. I've been here for four years and I like it very much. I made many friends from Korea as well as from other countries. In my free time I like to meet my friends and enjoy spending time with them. Also I like to listen to music and to read books, mostly suspense or crime stories.

I decided to go into the Upeace program, because I want to work for the UN, a civil society organization or an NGO. I'm thinking about going into the field of education after completing my studies. I learned a lot through my undergraduate major "Global Communication" and I think this is the right track for me to continue. After completing the UPeace program, I will apply for a PhD program in the U.S. or Canada.

Mina Sheikhha (An introduction to Myself)

I've never even imagined writing an essay about one's self would be a task of many hours. Now that I'm actually on it, I realize that no matter how simple a person is, when it is time to write about it, there are millions of things to choose among.

I'm an Iranian undergraduate student from the University of Tehran, majored in Italian literature, who came to HUFS Korea as an exchange student a semester ago, an unpredicted opportunity which became a turning point of my life.

I used to think that I know what I want, and that I'm heading to it. Coming to Korea, my box got bigger, and I changed directions, now I barely know what will show up next, but I started believing that life is all about unpredictable challenges that I'm determined to accept.

The first turning point was falling out of linguistics and becoming an international relation admirer, with a growing desire to work in the national security section. Now all I care about is learning more, seeking neutral science, one that is almost impossible to obtain within the borders of my country. For that to accomplish, I'm planning to study my masters in South Korea, and later I'll be heading to the States to study as a PhD student in Princeton University.

To define myself in as few words as possible, I would say I'm a truth seeker who rebels against anything obscure within the margins of science. I need to know, and that's all I care about.

I'm in love with books; a trip to the book store would make my day. I love the smell, the colors and the possibility of such huge obtainable knowledge existing in a book. I believe among all the things that can inspire and change a person, a good book would be candidate number one. I'm a huge fan of music, but since I'm determined to stay as boring as possible, I feel my best when I'm listening to classical. I'm also learning piano and violin, which I'm not that talented. I had stopped practicing ever since I came to Korea.

Language is my passion; that's why I chose it as my major. I'm in love with English, as I believe it to be the key to unlimited science. I love movies, but being easily bored and hardly impressed, I barely use the "That was a good movie" phrase, so I'd rather hit the cinema based on a friend's recommendation rather than a random movie.

I'm also a sport fanatic, exciting sports such as tennis and swimming, or soccer can really cheer me up. But I don't enjoy watching, I like to be involved more as a player.

My studies, my friendships, my whole life is based on a simple factor: To strive for perfection. I'm determined to prove it with my own life that: Only impossible is impossible. So I tend to take more responsibilities than what a person my age does. I enjoy being good at something, rather than enjoy doing it.

I believe to change the world, one shall start from one's self, and that's an almost mission impossible for everybody, yet I tend to make it happen. To me, a better world is only possible when individuals are changing for better, and I'm determined to do my share.
